How much is too much for a kids party?

Post by Kerryw on Mon 24 Mar 2014 - 8:45

I understand wanting them to have fun but is there a decent amount to spend or does anything go as long as you can afford it?

We were at the park (OK country club) yesterday and there was a kids party looked like a 4/5 yr old party but they had a ferris wheel and two ponies and a big jumping castle and what looked like 30 kids and their parents - and I know the venue charges R2000 to book and then food is extra and it must come from them.

So DH and I worked out it must have cost R20 000 for the party!

it looked like childrens heaven but was it necessary?

Flip!!! but then again if I could afford it I properly would also not know where to stop!

I put away R100.00 a month for Gen's birthday, so try not to spend more than R1 000.00, make everything myself then it not to hard to stay within the budget, but will have to see how it will work as she gets older

I think it depends what you can afford, I think. R20 000.00 if the dad earns R100 000.00 and the mom herself isn't far behind, is nothing, but so can R2 000.00 be nothing if you earn R40k pp but R1 000.00 can be too much for a single mother who earns R15 000.00.

R20 000.00 - is a sh!t load of money. Parties have become so fancy. Where are the days where you mom baked the cake (doesn't matter how awful it looked) and you had sweets and chips.

To me, that is way too much. This year we are doing Spur (R50 per kid) and they get a choice of kiddies meal, soda, ice cream and a party pack (spur) I'll add onto that, but not to the extreme. And I am baking the cake myself this year, heaven help me.

I still think it will be fun and I still spent time on making the invites etc look nice.

I think that is way too much especially on my salary I won't be able to. I think it all depends on what you can afford. Plus I enjoy making the stuff myself. that is the best part of the party and the kids love getting involved in making things too.

I wont be able to afford that, but if I could I would. I think a birthday is special - and if you as a parent can afford to do the extreme - why not? You are spoiling your child - but you are also spoiling the kids that were invited. I am all for big birthday parties :-)
My husband on the other hand .... well, lets just say what he doesn't know cant hurt him - hahaha.
How much have you spent on a birthday party? We spent equivalent to 1 months rent for Annabelles first birthday - all inclusive though. And I must say - I believe it was worth every cent.

Don't you think that you might set the benchmark really high and the question is, what do you do the next year and year after that and what will your child expect at the age of 16?

I have to agree with Adele, I feel the more you spend the higher you are setting that benchmark for future parties.  I tried to make most things myself and keep costs as low as possible and I really enjoyed it.

I also try to make what I can, I love it! Sometimes even with all the effort and money people don't notice half of what you think you "need" I have learnt that...

Re: How much is too much for a kids party?

I hear what you are saying - but when they get older they wont want the parties any more - you can give them the option of going to Gold reef city for the day with 5 friends for example .... this is how I see it. I'm only going to be able to arrange her parties the way I want them for the first few years - thereafter what she wants goes. I guess it also has to do with the fact that I NEVER EVER had a birthday party. My mom had 6 kids - me being the last - I never had a single birthday party. Maybe that's the root of my obsession.
Have a great evening everyone!

I usually try to make everything myself adn it is a mad dash on the day. but I have fun with the theme and everything.

This year cause I dont have the energy or money we went small 8friends at croc city - i still did a theme but did much less of everything. It was great !!

Cost us R1800 for everything the venue the food the drinks for parents (and the waiters tip - so no running round for me making tea and finding more ice) adn entrance for parents and kids. The kids had a great time and got to hold a baby croc.

I also wonder if that big party was actually money well spent as half the kids wern't on the rides or ponys and maybe it becomes "normal" to them. But I suppose if you spend R100 000 a month on a bond what is R20000 for a party.

I know I save having one party for both boys but then I tend to get carried away sometimes - I wonder how long I can get away with one party for all 3 ;)

R1 000.00 I'd say. I will go slightly more about R1200.00 as I said that we will invite the entire class at R50 per child (party box and venue). No hidden extras. Parents no charge. I can bring coffee, milk etc. and having some little cakes made for them at
R180.00. Last year they did not have a party and next year they will have the opportunity of taking two friends to the Spur each. We on the knit one slip one basis. They not having parties every year.

I tend to go overboard and pull out all the stops when it comes to the boys parties but that said, everything is cheaper here and start planning months in advance so I have time to make almost everything myself and also bake everything myself. (helps that I work from home) Parties usually work out between R1000 & R1500. No venue fee because its either at the daycare or at home, I bake everything (saving me another R600 atleast) make use of printable kits. Sweets & chips are expensive I buy at pick & pay, cant go with chinese shop brands because of D's allergies. We usually invite 10 kids and rent a jumping castle.

Personally, R20 000 on a party is wasting even you can afford it! money should not be thrown around like that!
