Ok, now I am confused - vaccines

Post by DJMommy on Mon 14 Jun 2010 - 10:08

SO the sister at Storks nest just said that the 6/8 week injection will cost R1390 per baby.
I just phoned a sister at the intercare clinic here in kempton and she said that some of the drops or injections were optional??? Like the previnar. SHe only recommends taking it from like 7 months. And they are not subsidised by the government, so it will cost R700.

There is one that is compulsory (cant remember the name now) and that is R540 each.

What did you ladies do with your vacs and where did you go and how much did you pay? Sorry for the questions, Dooi just got me thinking Smile

We payed R540 per injection because it is one injection I think it's called Infrahix or something like that - and it's not government subsidised - if you get the government ones it's 3 separate injections and I think it was somehting like R50...

Just check cos some medical aids don't deduct the injections from your savings they cover them!

Eve, the government has made prevanar part of the scheduled vaccs. if you got to a clinic, or pharmacy that keeps government stock then its free. but if you go private you pay even tho its on the government list.

Where abouts are you? I took becca to ackermans pharmacy in primrose and she got her prevenar free. its a private clinic that keeps government stock.

But the sister there told me once you use government stock, you need to continue with government. and they also do it at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and then 9 months again.

I went to stork's nest in PTA-East and although the first prevenar was paid from our medical, the rest were free on government, as they just made it free. We did the 6-in-1, infanrix Hexa, prevenar and rotarix, which should by now also be free on government stock.

They give her 3 injections and not 2 as usual .. that's the only bad thing. But I really don't have the money to pay for the injections... we haven't even been paid this month, and the pediatrician is asking R500 for Fridays' checkup!

EVE, this whole thing is a nightmare.

You may have read on the blog I drove to Broadacres once to get cheap vaccines. Before that I paid R1300 per baby at Dischem. D phoned me to say what's going on? What am I buying that's so expensive? Vaccinations, honey! Smile

Des is right - in our area, Ackermans Pharmacy in Primrose does them and Sister Carla at the Kloof Road Medical Centre also does them cheap.

Also, Sister Carla only charges for one twin Smile

Eve i think in areas where theres not a government clinic, then they appoint a chemist. Not sure how you find out tho, possibly on their site.

It would be worthwhile for you to find out tho eve, cos R1300x2 every 4 weeks is ALOT of a money. And I know, with discovery, it comes out of MSA.

Ja I spent a fortune the first set of vaccs, then went the gov route too. Although it is one injections more I don't think it matters too much! Prevenar is now free as is Rotarix, but only for babies born after Feb last year so we still had to pay for that. Eve try the baby clinic at Carstenhof (it is sort of near Kempton), I think the sister there stocks government stock, just make sure.

I was very tempted... but the queues with my two screaming babies did not bode well for me Smile

If you can do it, Eve, I think this is the best and cheapest option. otherwise the lovely Sister Carla or the pharmacy in Primrose.

You get that back from medical aid, by the way. IF you have funds!

I went to Paed with his 6week vaccs because he had a follow up appointment that day. But would rather go to the goverment clinic as it's free and I can use the Specialist cover for when he is really sick.

I have to pay about R1800 in my self payment (used all of my savings for my scans etc) The paed consult alone will be R1200, so I will hit it pretty quickly! DO you think the paed will make me have the vacs at his offices when I go for the consult?
