Private adoption success story

Post by Stacy on Wed 13 Jan 2010 - 11:01

Hi all.

Just posting my story to maybe give hope to others that your dreams can come true. Those of you in the adoption process must hang in there because its so worth it!!!!!! Its a long stressful process, but one smile or laugh makes it all worthwhile!

We adopted a baby girl privately a year ago! She was 6 weeks old when we got her and she weighed 3.2kg, we got her very unexpectedly, due to sad circumstances, went through the whole process of social worker screenings, court dates, home affairs and are still awaiting the final birth certificate with our surname.
The whole process probably cost about R10 000 to R15 000 at the most, so I didn't think it was so bad at all as the price for a birth hospitalization is worse! When she first came into our lives, I didn't know what had hit me!!!! We had to rush out and buy EVERYTHING that babies need! She was so tiny that even prem baby size clothes didnt fit her. There went the Christmas bonus that was going on a big screen TV!!

It was hard, I was personally not prepared for the sleepless nights and the exhaustion that followed at times, but a year down the line, things are going well. She is now a healthy 14 month old baby and the joy of our lives!! I now feel like a mommy (which I battled with) and heaven help anyone that messes with her!!

To top it off, she is one of a set of twins and my sister has adopted her sister (confusing hey!!) so we were able to keep both girls in the family and they are together every day! Now we just have to get over the cousins???? or sisters???? explanation when they understand as we will tell them the incredible story of how they came to us!

So if you in the "Process" still, hang in there, the smiles, giggles and first words will make you forget the stressful times forever!!!

Lots of love

SAve your pic to your computer. then when you want to post it, look at the little blocks just above the reply section. The 6th block is 'host your image'. CLick on that. It will a bring a block up. Look for the tab that says "browse". Search for the pic and then click 'open'. And then click host.

If you go into your profile... it is the eighth purple heading on the top of the page. Click on signature and you can add your details there.

Since joining this forum over a year ago I have also established that PCOS is quite common. It must have something to do with our lifestyle and stress levels because it is more frequent now than in the old days. Unless they just never knew about it.

No worries about all the questions. That is how we get to know one another.

I don't have my own child. The little boy in the picture is by nephew Keagan. He was born on 20 July 2009. He is a HUGE part of my life and at this stage the closest thing I have to my own. He is such a pleasure and I adore him.

My sister and her husband lived in London. I flew over for the birth to help my sister and her husband. 9 days after Keagan was born my sister's husband flew back to SA to attend his dad's funeral. After the funeral he himself was killed in a car accident. My sister has since moved back to SA with Keagan and lives with my parents during the week and with my husband and I on weekends. It has been such a joy having in my home even though the circumstances have been very sad and tough.

I wanted to ask but did not want to pry. Had you been trying to conceive and looking at adopting or did you adopt due to the circumstances that you mentioned?

Re: Private adoption success story

Post by Stacy on Thu 14 Jan 2010 - 12:41

Oh gosh!!! How tragic! My friends sister also lost her husband tragically so I understand your loss!!!! Ive also emailed you as I couldnt see my reply!!! So you will see the same questions on my email!! Sorry!! Nice that you get to spend so much time with your nephew, and I feel your inner pain for wanting one of your own. Its a yearning that only people in our situation feel. I still want to go through the whole pregnancy, birth thing!!

Well, My hubby and i have been trying to conceive on and off (as we became very dis-illusioned at times) for about 8 years!!!! We had only just started all the blood, sperm tests etc and I was about to go for the investigative operation so we could try AI. Was booked into the theatre and everything, and then we were approached by the biological parents of the twins. (Who worked for our father) about the adoption, so put the whiole fertility thing on hold and went ahead with the adoption.

Im now wanting to start the fertility thing again!!!! Shew. Still thinking about it a bit though!!! Scary process hey!

I agree. It is great having him but I would still like to experience the whole thing myself.

8 years... long time. I never thought I would even have to wait 3 years. Amazing how time flies.

Well, you are more than welcome to join us in the ttc lounge as well. There are quite a few of us in there as well.

I will post your pics shortly. Glad to have you on OPM. We have such a lovely family here.
